Sifting through the bright prints and nostalgic photos, I am searching for just the right piece of art to grace my living room wall. And my options are plenty – bordering on excess – as I stroll through the jam-packed aisles of the Picture Frame Factory. Proudly serving art enthusiasts since 1977, and now ensconced in their new Dufferin Street location, the factory is perfectly situated among the trendy fashionable stores and haute cuisine restaurants of Toronto’s Queen West neighbourhood.
“It’s great to be so close to galleries and artists,” says owner Tufan Ugur, who took over the family business after graduating with a business degree. “They’re our most frequent and loyal customers.”
To underscore his point, I’ve already met two artists in the store - who also happen to be employees of the Picture Frame Factory. As one of the few framers left in the city, Tufan takes pride in the workmanship and commitment to quality he can authentically stand behind.
“We are a full scale operation; we do everything in house. We don’t just take orders. We have retail in front, operations in the back.”
I’ve seen his back room, where highly skilled framing technicians tend to custom orders. The overall atmosphere is one of camaraderie and family, further emphasized by a dusty, vintage frame I find winningly displayed on a shelf in the store.
“Is this you?” I ask Tufan, looking at an instantly recognizable photo, likely taken in his elementary school years.
“It is,” he replies with a smile. There is no mistaking it; this family owned business wears its heart on its sleeve… and displays their family photos in their store.
The Picture Frame Factory is open Monday to Saturday. Find them at their new location at 450 Dufferin Street.
